Startup Nautilus Data Technologies has surprised many with the idea of a floating data centers. Or rather, not even the very idea, but the fact that the company began to implement a project for the creation of two data centers, that will not be on the ground but on the water. The company first announced itself at the beginning of the year, and said rather loudly, provide the public with plans to build floating commercial data centers. Data centers would be used to accommodate the server hardware that is Nautilus Data Technologies acts as a colocation provider.
According to the company’s founders, Magkeyla Arnold (Arnold Magcale) and Denieloa cake (Daniel Kekai), near floating data centers have several advantages compared to conventional DC. Firstly, it is possible to quickly move the data center from place to place, if necessary. The second – the lack of such factors as natural disasters – earthquakes, wars, etc. Of course, there is also the possibility of a storm, but DC is quite well adapted to the roughness of the sea of any force. But at such a facility is always available refrigerant – a water system that picks up from the bottom of the vessel.
The company operates on the market a year and as many as six years. Earlier Nautilus Data Technologies especially not the world – the company created a project DC, developed infrastructure elements and software. As it turned out, the entire infrastructure to deploy floating data centers is quite simple and fast. In the case of successful first experience with two DC-barges within six months will be built eight floating data centers. The first data center, which was launched, built at the shipyard in March Island.
Previously, a test version of the data center, which tested the viability of the idea, which can accommodate five server racks with a design load of 32 kW. This PUE was a record low – only about 1,045.
After the company received a $ 25 million investment, the real work began. After several months of preparation it has a full-size boat was launched, and now the company is gradually creating the necessary infrastructure. Physically Floating DC is 30 miles from San Francisco – there are a lot of companies that have already expressed the desire to rent a part of the floating capacity of the data center. Rated power DC is about 8 MW and a capacity – 800 server racks.
Interestingly, the company acts openly and regularly conducts tours for their clients – both under construction DC, and on a working prototype. Among the tenants of its capacity of data centers the company calls A10 Networks, Applied Materials, and some other companies. Also part of the facilities may be rented by the US Navy – the shipyard owned by the military, and created an unusual data center. Now the US Navy just are searching for alternatives to standard data centers, and one of the main criteria is the mobility of the object. It Nautilus Data Technologies just can offer – because of DC without problems can work in any more or less a major port in the world where there is a reliable energy infrastructure, network infrastructure, and some other systems.
The work of the company is fast – earn a data center on the water in the first quarter of 2016. Mobile call center Eli M, and after his readiness to be towed to the west coast of the USA – the exact location is not reported. The basis for the data center is restored military barge. The service life of these barges is quite large, and is 50 years old. All network equipment and supporting peripherals to be placed in a special room on the deck. Cooling and power supply will be placed under the deck.
Interestingly, the floating DC power consumption is significantly lower power consumption of conventional data center. The new data center, according to representatives of the project will consume 50% less energy than a similar DC power and size. This is possible thanks to the development of special software platform, “sharpened” under DC operation on the water, as well as the original cooling system using seawater.
